By now I’m sure all of you have heard about the horrible destruction and tragedy that’s going on in Haiti right now. When times like this happen it’s always wonderful to see the amazing outpouring of help that people around the world, especially American’s, give. So many companies and organizations are donating a great amount of time, money, and products, and even individuals are reaching out and doing all they can to help.
It’s very sad though, that it takes something so horrific for us to take the focus off ourselves and our country and focus on others. In fact, I think too often as American’s we tend to be totally self absorbed and forget that there are really even other countries in the world. Not really, of course, but the way we live seems to state that. I know that I’m guilty of having that mentality. It seems like we struggle with caring beyond our own friends and families, let along beyond our own country.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all about America. I love it with my whole heart and think it is the best place in the world. My husband has given his career and my families’ lifestyle up to serving our country. But we are so very, very incredibly blessed in America and it’s good for us to be reminded of that. It’s good for us to look out into the world and take just a little bit of all we’ve been blessed with and try to in turn bless others.
Kiva.org is a wonderful organization that allows people to reach out and touch the lives of people all around the world. These are hard working, real people who are trying to make a living for themselves and their families. You can even see their pictures and exactly what kind of business they are running and what they’re specifically going to do with the money they receive, so you have the confidence of supporting only something and someone you really want to. There are young moms, business men, people selling produce and textiles, and ranchers. What I really like about this organization is that you’re not giving anyone a free handout; you’re helping people who are trying and working but just need a little help to get on their feet.
How it works is you choose an individual that you would like to make a loan to. Then you donate that amount, and they pay you back over time. Once they’re done you have your principal back (the interest goes to Kiva in order to keep the program running) and you can either take your money back or loan it out all over again. You do take the risk of them not paying you back, but they have a high success rate and when do you not take a risk when you try to help someone? All along you’ll know you’re doing something vitally important, something that is literally life changing for another person.
Pretty nifty right?
