God’s Shelter for Your Storm by Sheila Walsh *Review & Giveaway*

God's Shelter for Your Storm

We all have storms that we go through, it’s unavoidable in this life. It seems that many times when we reach a stormy period in our life it does just  that, not a few bad rain drops here and there, but unrelentless pouring drenching rain of trouble, heartache, and distress come crashing down on us for weeks or months. The past several months have been extremely stormy for me and my little family. If you’re a constant follower of my blog you know that I’ve dealt with my son being placed in ICU, 2 cross country temporary relocations, the death of my very dear Grandpa, and the separation from my husband as he is deployed and I get to play “single mom” to my two babies. All of this has left me with a heavy burden that feels like it’s pressing down on my chest. Up until this year I had never even know what people meant when they said they felt depressed, I’d never experienced that emotion. I’m such a positive, bubbly person that even in the hard times I’d never gone beyond sad. I fully understand now as everything hits me and makes me feel so helpless at times. Sheila’s book God’s Shelter for Your Stormwas a great read for me right now. Though I’ve heard all about the promises of God before, and even read books on them recently, it’s still always just so good to go back through and really focus in on them and claim them. One section I really loved was this one “Suffering and comfort walk hand in hand, in that belong to the God who both suffers with us and brings comfort, care, and understand to us.” I also loved how she took familiar stories in the Bible-like the woman who touched Jesus helm and was healed, and brings interesting historical information and insight into the stories that bring the characters to life and make their troubles real. The pictures in the book are beautiful as well. I really enjoyed this book and several parts were a blessing to me, I’d highly recommend it for you or anyone in your life you know that is going through their own storm right now!

Endangerbles CD *Review & Giveaway*

***This giveaway is now CLOSED congrats to Darcie K.  who won***

Endangerbles

I always think that it’s important to have my kids not only listen to music that is fun and entertaining for them, but that also teaches something, whether it be about our Christian faith, good manners, or respect and love for our Earth and the creatures that God created in it. The Endangerbles CD focuses on that last aspect, in a way that makes it kid friendly. Amber loved the first song that talks about the name of the Cd because it has monkey sounds like the background (haha). She kept asking to listen to “the little monkey again, please. I love him”. Too funny! After the first song she quickly lost interest, however. I think at 3 years old this CD is too old for her and seems to me to be more geared towards the elementary school age group of kids. The songs remind me of kid versions of grownup music, with a few songs having a Bob Marley flavor and others reminding me of the Disney pop-esque Hannah Montana type music. If you enjoy kids CDs that have a good variety with each song and your children enjoy that kind of music then this would be a great CD for you!

If you’d like to check out their sound for yourself you can receive one free Endangerble song to download! All you have to do is visit The Endangerble Website, sign up to be a deputy, select SSA as how you heard about the site and you’ll receive an email with a link to your free download!

Women of Substance Radio Interview

What does the name Women of Substance represent for you?
Substance can be defined as “significant quality with the implication of a hidden or special significance.” Music of Substance is not just entertainment or fluff, but has an essential “core” brimming with heart, soul, and spirit.
What kind of artists do you play?
Women of Substance Radio plays music by female performers who deliver high quality music that speaks to the listener through vocal excellence, depth of character and emotion, and lyrics that leave a lasting impression. Our tagline is “Whether you’re a label artist or an Independent, if you’ve got great music, you’re on Women of substance Radio.”
What distinguishes your station from other online stations?
We play lots of quality Indies that don’t get played on other stations. Our listeners appreciate and trust us as a source for great new music. We do the work for them weeding through the massive supply of music available to find the good stuff. When I find that one gem amongst a sea of lackluster music, I see it as a privilege and responsibility to shout it from the rooftops–or at least from my blog and on Facebook.  We have a monthly Top 10 for Indie songs, create special genre-specific and themed shows, offer free downloads from our artists, and do lots of promotion of our artists through our newsletter and Facebook/Twitter. We organized a live “Showcase” in the Los Angeles area for the past 2 years to feature some of our best artists.
Who are your personal favorite artists?
Well-known artists: Sara Bareilles, Sarah McLachlan, Missy Higgins, Colbie Caillat, Sheryl Crow, Jonatha Brooke, Aimee Mann, Carrie Rodriguez, Heart, Tori Amos
Some current favorite Indies: Tina Dico, Beth Waters, Cheryl B Engelhardt, Alana Grace, Katie Cole, Rebecca Loebe, Karmina, Kari Kimmel, Myla Smith, Jenn Bostic, Rachael Sage, Chloe Temtchine, Emm Gryner
How long has Women of Substance been around?
Since 2007, almost 4 years
How was it started?
I created WOS Radio because I was sick of the big broadcasters telling me what was going to be popular—limiting my choices to mostly watered-down music that had no heart and no meaning. Before starting Women of Substance Internet Radio, I was already almost exclusively an internet radio listener for that reason. I want a variety, to be introduced to fresh sounds and new artists constantly, and to be drawn in by what I hear and be moved or challenged by it.
It started as a hobby, a way to arrange and play my own favorite music and music I discovered, but it really caught on and has grown rapidly into “the” destination on the Internet for great music by female artists.

Tips for buying used baby items online

I remember the days when the classifieds could only be found in the newspaper.  These days you can still find that section, but it’s far more common to shop for any and everything online. Through multiple sites you can find everything from a couch to baby clothes. I’m a big supporter of buying things that are gently used. Especially for baby items you can find some amazing deals online by looking through the classifieds. Our stroller, bouncy chair, swing and exasaucer were all previously used and have worked amazing for us.  Since most of these items are used so briefly for babies you can usually get used ones that look brand new and are just a fraction of the price of one even from the cheapest department store.  Clothes are another great thing to purchase gently used from other moms. Almost all of Tyler’s clothes right now are ones that are hand me down or purchased used, and Amber has gotten some gorgeous fancy dresses that were probably $30 or more new for just a few dollars.  When purchasing used clothing just be sure to go over it very carefully and check for any tears or stains and you’ll be in business! Two things that you should never buy new are car seats and cribs. With car seats there is no way of knowing if it has been in a crash and there have been so many recent crib recalls that it is just better to buy an inexpensive one new. Though it might take a little bit of looking and searching buying online from others helps you and them!

These Hearts Forever Ended Yesterday *Review*

Though you might not think it about me at first glance, there is a little bit of a hard core rocker chic in me! It’s been buried way down deep since having kiddos (after all, as I commonly say I listen to screaming all day long–why would I choose that in music anymore?) But back in the days of being a college kid and newly wed I was very much into the hard core Christian rock scene (I’m just full of hidden surprises!). Hubby and I even attended a hard core rock concert (the Tooth and Nail tour) in DC. Phew was that an adventure! We were standing in the back of the bottom of the building thinking that we’d be out of the mosh pit–little did we know that the *entire* floor was considered the mosh pit! It was a crazy, fun night and left us with some of our funniest and favorite memories! Listening to Forever Ended Yesterday brought back a lot of those memories! I love how this band really does have a Hawthorne Heights feel to them–but then throws in Demon Hunter type screams into the mix–never heard a band like that before! Most of the times the harmonizing bands can’t scream (just sounds silly when they try) and the screamo bands can’t sing well normally. Finding a band that can do both–and do both well, well this is a first for me! My favorite song is the only slow one on the cd–In Terms of Two, I love it!

Though you can definitely tell that this is a debut cd–not the best production quality, many times the music drowns out the vocals and it’s hard to understand them, even the harmonizing vocals, not the screams, lol–I think it is extremely unique and that fans of this genre will be excited to hear them! The only other thing I had any bones to pick is that it always irks me just a tad when bands claim  to be Christian on the label and then have secular sounding/watered down lyrics. So while their Christian *influence* is good and apparent and there is nothing wrong with the lyrics, don’t go in expecting to be hit over the head with Bible or God, I guess to some that is a good thing, but I always like bands that shout the gospel-even if they’re screaming it 🙂

In any event check it out and decide for yourself! You can visit their Facebook Page here, find them on MySpace here, on YouTube here, and you can purchase the  Forever Ended Yesterday CD from Amazon Here

Tables for decorating

When we lived in North Carolina I got a job working for a furniture store. Even though my job was to price everything I sometimes got to help the interior designers and decorators with setting up the different displays. One of my favorite pieces that we sold were the console tables. They were the best for decorating with accessories. My very favorite are cherry wood pieces like the one in the picture to the left, so beautiful! Some of the most fun pieces I came across were the nesting tables. I just love nesting dolls and these cute tables reminded me of them! There are so many fun things you can do with them! Of course one of the most popular furniture pieces is a coffee table set. I’ve been wanting to buy one since we got married, hopefully once we move to our next station we will be able to get one. In the meantime Tyler has been enjoying the one at my brother’s house–it’s the perfect size to stand up on and bang things 🙂 When you are looking to decorate your living room any of these tables make a perfect and professional looking touch to your design!

TreSemme Color Revitalize Shampoo & Conditioner *Review*

I’ve been getting my hair highlighted/lowlighted/dyed and more since I turned 16. I’ve also used a ton of different shampoos and conditioners, from super fancy expensive salon brands to “Wal*Mart specials” I’ve found that normally there really is a different in the feel and quality of the two. Before this campaign from BzzAgent I’d never tried TreSemme. I have been super pleased with the Color Revitalize Shampoo and Conditioner! My hair is really thick and coarse so it’s hard to ever get it really soft. These products do a great job of making it that way, and also control the frizziness/staticiness that usually comes along with my hair. Those were unexpected benefits I wasn’t expecting! I haven’t recently re-colored my hair so I can’t attest to it’s ability to keep color from fading (it is supposed to keep color fresh for up to 40 washes!), but it has kept my current color looking nice since I began using it. I’ve recommended it to several family members and suggest you give it a try too! You can pick it up at any Wal*Mart/drugstore type of place for really reasonably priced as well! As part of this campaign I was sent several high value coupons for Tresemme so if you’d like one just leave me a comment about whether you’ve tried it before and I’ll get it touch with you and send you one! You can also learn more by visiting tresemme.com!

Custom Sticker *Giveaway*

***This giveaway is now CLOSED congrats to Chisum Crew who won***

I have gotten address labels from UPrinting before and have been super pleased with them! I’m sure their sheet labels will be wonderful as well!

Custom address labels aren’t the only things you could make though! Do you have a small business? Including a sticker on the packages and envelopes you send out gives you that little extra edge and makes people feel like they’re getting something special when they receive it!
Are you potty training or working on something with your kiddos? Why not design up some super fun rewarding stickers to use for their charts?!
These could also be used to label sippy cups, backpacks, bottles, and more so you never get them mixed up at the playgroup again!
Or what about designing a sticker with you child’s name on it to help them learn how to spell?
See?! Endless possibilities! So many that I am going to have a hard time deciding what to use mine for! If you need some other ideas just check out the standard label templates.

Kitty Wolf Jump the Tracks *Review*

Jump The TracksAs I’ve mentioned before I’m not the biggest fan of kid’s music. Tinky pinkling high pitched noises give me a headache after about one song! When I was asked to review Kitty Wolf Jump the Tracks I was happy because it looked like it would have a different “flavor” to it than most family music cds do. I wasn’t disappointed, the cd is definitely unique and unlike any other kid CD I’d heard before. It has a bluegrassy rockin’ feel to it. Though this means that I like listening to it much better than other kid cds Amber wasn’t as crazy about it. She danced around to a few of the songs but then quickly lost interest. I think since she’s 3 it might be just a tad old for her and that she will probably like it more in the coming years, once she can sing along with and appreciate the funny lyrics. If you’d like to check out Jump The Tracks for yourself you can purchase the MP3 Here be sure to check out their Myspace Page Here and their website here as well!

The Night Night Book *Review*

The Night Night Book is an adorable bed time story. With unqiue pictures and cute phrases like “Bubble clean. Teeth are brushed. Milk in tummy. House is hushed.” it makes for a whimsical and cute recap of the day and the things you do to prepare for bedtime. My 3 year old calls it the “comfy cozy” book and as you can see from the picture Tyler loves it and loves to flip through and look at the picture. They have both enjoyed it many times since we received it! A sweet and quick bedtime story this is the perfect addition to get for your home library! At $7.95 it’s extremely reasonably priced for a board book as well! You can find it here to purchase!
