Summer should be all about enjoying time together as a family! When you’re on a tighter budget (like our college student with a family budget, for example) it can feel a bit discouraging as you look at how much everything costs. Simply going on a movie date with your hubby will run you around $30 or more if you get snacks and a drink and skip out on dinner—and let’s not go into how much all that would be if you choose to bring along the kids!!
Because of this I’m constantly on the lookout for how I can pair up smart shopping, good savings, and score deals towards fun things for our family whether it means a fun but inexpensive date for hubby and me, or a way for the whole family to have fun together for less!
My first big score this summer was coming up with a perfect way to have a fun dinner & a movie date on a dime!
Clever Date Dining Idea: For a fun, easy dinner date pick up your favorite main item from a fast food place and take it to a nearby park or picnic bench and enjoy with drinks and sides you bring along. We headed to Jersey Mikes and I got the Club Sub “Mikes Way” and then ate it with my lemon water to drink outside in the beautiful 80 degree day we had. Not only was it just as satisfying we saved a bunch of money and I was still being “good” for Operation Short Shorts–win/win/win! This also works great for eating out with the entire family too–you can even save on the kids meal and skip the junky plastic toy by getting a large adult chicken nuggets and bringing along sippy cups and apple slices from home!
My next score came in the uh—yes the paper product aisle at Wal*Mart not exactly where you normally think of getting hit by brilliant romantic scores–right??!! But sure enough we literally ran into them–as shown above! (to see more glaring funny pictures be sure to check out my entire Google+ Album)
(Total Bunny Trail Here: just look at how cute my 6 foot 7 hubby is! And he’d kill me if he reads this but he is so super smart too, just got a 4.0 his first college semester back after 8 years away from school in the military! He is my polar opposite because he hates pictures, social media, and being the center of attention, especially online–but he’s too cute to not feature on here from time to time, even if it is in the paper product aisle, Bahaha and ssshhhh nobody tell him about my bunny trail!)
So–back on track! While shopping with hubby we came across Scott Paper Towels — probably not a super exciting/uncommon shopping experience–however these guys had *this* on them–which made them special!
Clever Family Fun tip: Look for ways to save on fun while stocking up on items you already buy and need.
Scott has a great shared values program that I’m now signed up for, I love it when I get rewards for buying products I have to buy anyways! At just $5.97 in my store and with a $4 Vudu credit that was like getting this special Scott paper towel pack for $1.97!! As you can see on the sticker they also are running this on toilet paper (they call it bath tissue–funny!) but this Walmart was all out of it! (apparently it was a popular deal!)
You might remember that we tried and loved Vudu when I got my early copy of Men In Black 3 a few months ago. I love Vudu because it makes seeing new releases (and sometimes even movies that are still *in* the theaters) inexpensive and easy! Since having kiddos watching movies at home is just so much easier than going out to the theaters too!
I hopped online to redeem my code and in a few easy steps we were cuddle up in a quilt and browsing away–I love how it shows you ratings of the movies and how much of a credit we have right there at the top! Since we had the four dollar credit we decided to “splurge” on the HDX version of Dredd—which my hubby has been *dying* to see ever since the previews for it came out (he’s an 80s movies fan so he’s loving all the remakes of them lately like Total Recall and this one!) and yes–this is our standard “date night” movie fare–lucky for him I love action movies just about as much as he does!
So for a very fun date dinner & a movie we spent under $20 for everything-not bad at all! And as I mentioned with just a few tweaks this easily turns into a family date for everyone for under $30–*and* you get paper towels and toilet paper out of the deal too!
