Have you noticed that classic toys are making a huge comeback? Every time I turn around it seems that characters that I loved growing up like the Bernstain Bears are popping up with new toys and spin offs.
Personally I absolutely love it! It’s so fun to become reacquainted with “old friends” as an adult and seeing my kids fall in love with them. This special and unique connection can be encouraged and developed, so I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on how to help it flourish!
How to Bond With Your Kids Using Classic Comeback Toys
Give them a Gift!
A great way to introduce your kids to your childhood favorites is to let them get acquainted to them through a gift, and it adds a nice surprise for them as well.
I’m a huge advocate of buying Christmas presents year round–in fact it’s the end of June and I’m almost all done with my Christmas shopping for this year! One reason I love doing this is that anytime I see a great deal or limited edition find I can snap it up and put it aside for later on. This way my kids aren’t getting overly spoiled all year long but I can still get the best out there since I’m looking for it year round instead of scrambling at the last moment and dealing with crowds!
One great find recently was the Bernstain Bears: Golden Brother Edition and the partnering Sister Edition. At my local Walmart I found it in the electronics section for $17.96 but it might be closer to $19.99 where you are at. It includes a 2 hour DVD featuring the Bernstain Bears and all their normal loveable antics and a stuffed toy. While the DVDs are the same I made sure to get one of each so that there will be no fighting between Amber and Tyler of who gets which!
Experience it with them! Once you’ve given your gift the best way for you to bond with your kids is if you experience it with them! Pop some popcorn and snuggle up together on the couch to watch it with them along with their new stuffed animal. During the movie you can pause to ask questions, “Was how they treated each other very nice? What might they have done that would be better?” After the movie is done you can tell them how you know the characters and what your favorite things about them growing up were. My kids really get a kick out of any time I start talking about “when mommy was a little girl”. Don’t be afraid to break out the *really* old pictures to give them an even better idea of you as a child!
Keep the Experience Going! With the classic comeback toys the good news is that there is usually a whole lot of things out there that go along with them! I like to use a good mix of the classic books that I fell in love with and the new spin off shows/DVDs and toys. For the Bernstain Bears I knew my kids needed to learn to love hubbies favorite book growing up, The Spooky Old Tree, and the I Can Read version of Sleepover will be perfect as Amber starts Kindergarten next year!
