It’s the million dollar question–why would a loving, kind God allow horrible things to happen–especially to people who love and serve Him? Inspired by the death of Cameron’s close friend who succumbed to cancer at the age of 15, Kirk Cameron takes viewers on an inspiring and hope-filled visual journey to better understand the biggest doubt-raising question in faith: “Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?”
My take: Unstoppable is great–if you know what to expect going into the movie. If you’re looking for earth shattering revelations for answers to the greatest question of all time that have never been discussed or contemplated before, you’ll want to look elsewhere. If, instead, you’re looking for a sermon-like 60 minutes that runs the gamut of Scripture, from creation, the fall of man, the first murder, and the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ–ending in a good dose of Romans 8:28, with dramatic re-enacting and artistic depictions, then this movie is for you.
While a great reminder that man is a fallen, sinful creature and the greatest good of all time came from the greatest evil–the death of God Himself–I found the stories and the explanation to be one I’ve heard many times in many sermons. This would be a good film for those who just got saved, or as a comfort to those who might be going through a hard time and need to be reminded of the truth of God’s word. My husband felt it was a little too much focused on Kurt sitting there and talking, and felt that an unbeliever might take the whole thing as a bit condescending. Although not very graphic, the movie does depict the murder of Abel and talks about the death and funeral of the 15 year old boy that was friend to Kurt’s family, so it’s one that you might not want to have the younger members of your family watch.
Overall I felt that it was good information, solidly based on the word of God, and Kurt is an engaging speaker and the film was shot artistically. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars–but don’t take my word for it! Check out the other Amazon Reviews for other takes on Unstoppable.
