Amber’s at that stage right now where if she gets the choice of what to wear she’ll pick a frilliest dress up or church dress she can find and beg me to wear it. I remember when I was like that too, delighting in dressing up and playing with makeup and wearing dresses to school and play! Somewhere throughout the years, however, dressing up came to be associated with church and work and seen as something that was a bit of a bother and uncomfortable. Soon I came to do what the majority of the “off of work” crew in America does and began to live in jeans and a t-shirt.
As I just mentioned in my printed denim post the other day–as a work from home mom most of the time this is fine, especially if you’re making an effort to still put together a stylish outfit! Over the past few years, though, I’ve discovered a few tricks that have helped me fall back in love with dressing up! This year I’ve been making an effort to get out of the jeans several times a week–and into something a little more “fancy”! Because I’ve felt better, looked my best, and gotten lots of compliments I wanted to share with you my secrets on….
How to Fall In Love with Dressing Up … as an adult!
The first step? Be comfortable! Yes, you read that right–and no I’m not being ironic! You can actually dress up AND be super comfortable at the same time! Choose soft, no-wrinkle fabrics in cuts that flatter and allow you to be comfy. I’ve discovered that I’m in love with empire waist dresses made with blended fabrics because they are so comfy I could practically sleep in them–in fact I’d argue that they’re *more* comfy than my jeans! You can wear them year round when you pair them with warm fleece trouser socks (that are also comfy enough to sleep in) and polish off the look by wearing a pair of flat boots, another great comfy choice that you can be on your feet all day in and they will support, not hurt! When you’re more comfortable than usual you’re much more likely to actually wear the clothes!
Another great super comfy, much more dressy than jeans option is to wear a long, loose flowing blouse (make sure it goes down PAST your rear please!) and wear fleece tights or leggings with it! This also looks great paired with boots or even flats!
My next tip is to make smart choices and not spend a fortune! Nice clothes usually come at a nice price–but there are ways to dress to impress without draining your wallet dry in the meantime! My dress, my boots, and some of my jewelry was thrifted–so I got all the style for pennies of the regular price! When it comes to leggings/socks/tights you’ll want to buy new. A reason I love fleece is that in addition to being perfect for keeping warm in winter, and being super comfy, it’s also very durable–much less worry about runs or tears! KushyFoot has great quality items that you order in sets, and they’re also super reasonably priced–so it’s money well spent!
My last tip is to make sure to choose clothes that flatter! As I mentioned I’m in love with empire waist dresses, but they work well for me because I have a small bust and a short torso. I can take advantage of these features–rather than bemoan them–by picking close fitting tops and long, flowing bottoms. As I often remind my hubby (jokingly) My legs have never been a selling point–so high boots and opaque tights keep the attention on what sparkles about me–and off of what doesn’t! Look honestly in the mirror and figure out your strengths and how to play them up, and then the areas that aren’t your favorite and how to make the most of them! Then begin looking for dressier clothing that is comfortable and works for your body type–once you hit on a great cut you can buy a variety of clothing in it and keep your look fresh while always looking great!
So–that’s how I recommend falling in love with dressing up again! Now go out there and get fancy!
