Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns To Listen

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen

This post has always been one of my most popular on Pinterest, and it’s too perfect for the  summer season not to share again. If you have a little one in PreK or Kindergarten, or if you’re a teacher of young children of any kind you’ll want to own this book! I will say, though, that even my 8 year old still enjoys reading the Howard Series 4 years after we added him into our home library, this lovable little bunny is just a lot of fun!

Here is my original post:

I find that as a parent I try to make sure that most of the shows that my children watch and the books that they reads (or that I read to them) are not only entertaining and wholesome, but also have some type of lesson or learning aspect about them. Fun, silly, “just because” shows definitely have their place–but I want to make sure that we use every opportunity to teach them valuable life skills in a way they don’t even realize that they’re learning!

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen couldn’t have come at a better time as Amber has been having a few problems with learning to listen. You know, REALLY listen and obey right away.

In Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen Howard is having a little problems with listening, to any and everyone including parents, friends, and teachers. Not because he’s purposefully being bad, there is just so much to be distracted by! This book is great because it shows the cause and effect of not listening, such as punishments from teachers, hurting friends or himself, and losing privileges, which are all shown in an engaging writing style. This book is great because it also shows the good things and rewards that good “really listening” bring!

We both loved the fun pictures and the discussion questions at the end of the book too.

This book is absolutely perfect for any pre-k – kindergartner or above who is having a little bit of difficulty in this area! (and don’t they all from time to time??)

Be sure to check out their website We Do Listen Foundation for free lesson plans, read alouds, and more!

How fun!! Great tips for fun with your kids that's cheap or free! How To Go on an Epic Mini Adventure With Your Kids!

The other day I walked into Tyler’s room to find him filling his backpack. He looks up and exclaims, “Mom! I’m filling up my pack with survival supplies, and then, I’m going to go *exploring*!! In the real woods! But….could you come with me, maybe? You know, to keep me safe?”

After this conversation, I told him that I thought us exploring in the woods was a great idea, and it was also a great idea to bring me along. I just love watching my kids develop their very own unique personalities which are now completely evident. Tyler especially has flourished in developing his interest and desires and communicating them in this past year and his “isms” keep me laughing daily! I am also always looking for ways to raise the kids to be sympathetic and respectful to others, and I believe family time together is a key component to all that!

Bible Stories Painting Book 2

Bible Stories Painting Book 2
Legalese Nonsense: Since Amber loves to paint I will always say yes when offered a chance to check out a great painting book! All buddy artistic talent, careful evaluations and paint splotches are our own.

Bible Stories Painting Book 2

I have really been enjoying the Candle Children’s Book series–especially their workbooks like My Very First Noah’s Ark Playtime and My Very First Easter Story Sticker Book. I hadn’t gotten a chance to check out any of their painting books before now, and since painting is one of Amber’s very favorite things I was looking forward to seeing how Bible Stories Painting Book 2  held up to our testing!

This vacation has been a little bit different, as we have been spending most of our days over at my Grandma’s house. While the extra time with her has been great it’s also meant that I’ve been left scrambling to come up with things to occupy my kiddos in a small space without a lot of resources.

My Very First Easter Story Sticker Book

You might remember that I just did a post on the Best Books & DVDs for Easter Baskets –well I just found one more book that I need to add to that list thanks to a book I was recently sent to review!

My Very First Easter Story Sticker Book is a very cool combination of a preschool style sticker workbook and a children’s story book.

Throughout the book there are “missing” pictures that your child has to find and match the stickers that go there. Amber spent a good 45 minutes doing this one afternoon and she absolutely loved it!

The ONLY thing that I didn’t love about the book was that the stickers are on the thinner side and for some with little ends I had to peel them up for Amber because they ripped otherwise. Not incredibly surprising considering the very inexpensive cost of the book (right now you can buy it for just $5.99!!) but I did want to mention that.

The illustrations are darling and I loved that it told the *entire* story of Easter beginning at the triumphal entry, covering Jesus visiting the temples, the last supper, the betrayal, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. Most children’s books cover only one aspect of the Easter backdrop story-not all of them, so that was a very cool thing about this book.

Not only do they cover everything they do it in a way that makes it easy to understand and evokes deeper conversation about the events with the parents. Amber and I got into a very interesting discussion about Jesus throwing over the tables in the temple since that wasn’t a story she’d heard of before this. In addition to the storyline each page is broken up into the main storyline on top and then suggestions on the bottom that are kind of like a study book question section-if you’re reading to a younger child (like when we read the book to/with Tyler) you might just use the bottom section, for an older child you might use just the top, or for an elementary school child you might use it all at the same time. For the last page (pictured above) it sums up Jesus life in 8 little squares which is pretty cool as well!

For everything it includes this really is an amazing buy and I would highly recommend including it in your child’s Easter basket this year! Be sure to check out the other reviews on Amazon as well–so far it has 5 stars!

Candle Bible for Kids, Toddler Edition

Candle Bible for Kids, Toddler Edition

There are a huge variety of baby, toddler, and children’s Bibles to choose from-and we have about 7 of them! I have to say that the Candle Bible for Kids Toddler Edition is now one of my favorites! It is absolutely perfect for toddlers and the stories are all “just right” for my 2 1/2 year old. I love how it includes enough details to stay true to the Biblical account without including so much that it looses his interest.

The size is also “just right” for little hands and the hardback cover makes it easy for him to grasp and turn the pages all by himself. I like that in addition to include the Sunday School Classic stories there are also not as well known tales like God speaks to Samuel and God feeds Elijah that are included.

One of my favorite parts of this Bible is the fun, bright, and colorful illustrations. They are so cute and really grab a toddlers attention! This would make a perfect first Bible for any little one!

Don’t take my word for it! Go check out the other Amazon reviews and grab a Bible for yourself-at $8.99 it’s a great price right now!

I received this book free from Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review of this book.

Personalized Stories

Holiday Gift Guide

 Personalized Stories

No Christmas would be complete without some kind of books making their way into the pile of presents! My favorite books to give as Christmas presents are personalized stories. I love that these days you can put your child in books when I was little that would have been super difficult or too expensive to do!
Personalized Stories

If you have little ones you probably already know how much they love books where they are finding something hidden in a picture–now imagine how much more fun it would be if they were looking for themselves! That’s the whole premise of Find Me If You Can!

Bammco Find Me if You Can

Personalized especially for your child they take your child’s face and hide it in a “sea” of other cute kiddos. There are 30 pages each with their own cute rhythms at the bottom of the page. Amber “helped” me with the pictures while Tyler was sleeping and she (very carefully) “inspected” the book for quite a while. She had so much fun finding her brother that I can only imagine how much he’ll like it!

Personalized Stories
Found him! (I added the arrow so you could find him easily too!)

One very cool option is that you can actually include up to 5 faces in a book so that if you have more than one child you don’t have to buy multiple books! As you can see it is put together in a binder-type style. That’s because it helps the book to lie completely flat so that it’s easy to look at the full pages and the hardback keeps it sturdy and durable.

Personalized Stories

The backgrounds are bright, fun pictures and are different for each set of pages. The books are $29.99 with one image and then go up in increments of $5 for each additional face. I love that this book encourages fun, reading, and concentration now–and will become a perfect keepsake to pass along to Tyler for his kids when he’s grow (how fun would it be to find a baby picture of your daddy??!!)

Howard B. Wigglebottom And The Monkey On His Back

“Howard had a monkey on his back because he was lying. And lying is NOT good!” ~ Amber

You might remember that we first met Howard B. Wigglebottom when he was learning to listen.  We enjoyed listening to that so much that we jumped at the chance to review Howard B. Wigglebottom And The Monkey On His Back

In this book Howard learns the consequences of telling lies–even if they seem to be for a “good reason” or one that might seem like “little white lies”.

Again this book came for a perfect time for us! I was shocked to recently catch Amber in her first lie. I mean, I shouldn’t have been-I knew it was coming-but it’s still a little stunning when it happens!! We’ve been working hard with her to teach her that the truth is ALWAYS better to tell than a lie!

I was so proud of her the other day because she came out of her room where she’d been playing, tears in her eyes, and told me, “Mommy I’m so, so sorry. I broke my doll crib.”

Sure enough she had (it was actually fixable, thankfully!! But she didn’t know that at the time) I was so happy, not about the cradle, but about the fact that she owned up to her mistake and came to me about it without trying to hide it or lie about it. It seems Howard, along with our other lessons, have made a great and positive impact!

Little Super Personalized Storybook

It’s no small secret now that I’m crazy about children’s books! My very favorite books are ones that can be personalized. There is something so special about your child having a book that is all about THEM! We have several personalized storybooks for Amber, but hadn’t gotten any for Tyler up until now.

I love that even though he’s my *super* busy boy the one thing that Tyler will actually sit for is to listen to a story! (even if it is just for one minute….while he’s a “naked baby”…. haha)

The Little Super personalized story from Paper Hat Press was absolutely perfect for my little super hero! Unlike personalized storybooks that use pictures these books have artwork-but that doesn’t mean that they’re not totally personalized! You help write the storyline in a fun and easy process, and then you can even pick the super hero character that best represents your child. The storyline is as adorable as the artwork.

Tyler absolutely *loves* this book! It’s one of his first “big boy” books and I can tell it will be a favorite for years to come. Amber actually loves it just as much as he does-she gets a kick that her name gets to be in the story too!

Such a fun product and such high quality-I’d highly recommend this for a birthday, Christmas, or just an “I love you” present!

A Perfect Pet for Peyton by Gary Chapman

I recently talked about reading The 5 Love Languages for Children and how interesting I found it. The Perfect Pet for Peyton is a wonderful children’s book that works hand in hand with the other one.

In this book two twins, Penny & Peyton, set out to find the “perfect pet pals” on their birthday. Along the way they learn a little more about themselves–and their friends–by the pets that are chosen that match their love languages perfectly.

This book would be great for young school age children. Amber absolutely *adores* it and we’ve been reading it over and over and OVER for bedtime each night. It’s a little on the longer side–but the amazing sounding pet emporium and all the different animals keep her entranced! Even though she’s a bit young to grasp the concept of love languages it’s still great for her to be learning the different ways we have to show people that we love them!

Rosie Flo’s Fashion Show

As I put in my Easter Post we ended the day with a fun Mommy & Amber coloring Fashion Show. We used the Rosie Flo’s Fashion Show and it was a blast!

Amber is always wanting to color together, so this was a perfect way to spend some quality time together! It made me remember how I always used to doodle, far into my teen years, and loved coloring and paper dolls when I was younger as well. It brought back lots of fond memories!

Once you color the fashion models in it’s super easy to pop them out and stand them up. The Pop Up Theater was very impressive and also easy to put together. The recommend ages are 6 and up, but Amber had a blast and has been very gentle with the dolls–so I’d recommend it for 4 and 5 year olds (with supervision) as well.

See our fantabulous models strutting their stuff on the runway?

The audience was quite impressed and ended the evening with great applause.

The whole idea is just so super cute–I love it! Amber’s been playing with the dolls all week since as well (only when Tyler’s sleeping, lol)
I think that this would be an adorable idea for a elementary school age girl’s birthday party–have the girls all draw and color a doll or two and then put a fashion show on at the end! You could build an entire adorable birthday party around it 🙂
You can get your own Rosie Flo’s Fashion show for $16.99 from Chronicle Books, I’d highly recommend it for a special holiday, gift, or just something fun for your little girl!
