5 Ways To Power Through Your Crazy Week

I know, I know. It’s a recurring theme around here lately. But seriously, this time of year is SO BUSY for me, and I know it is for you, too! For a while, I was just really struggling to keep up the energy and drive that I needed to tackle this season (literally and figuratively).

The first thing I did was to get organized and come up with a schedule to keep things on track and from slipping through the cracks. I recently shared that with you in my How To Rock Your Back To Life post. All the organization in the world, though, doesn’t do you a bit of good if you’re so exhausted you can’t get through it, or so distracted that you can’t focus.

So today I’m sharing with you things I’m doing in my life to be able to Power Through My Busy Week and actually manage to accomplish half of that list!

Get Enough Rest

Again, I know, I know. You’ve heard this one a million times, and chances are you might even laugh at it. Like, HOW is it possible to get enough rest? This one has always been super challenging for me, too. For one, I’m a night person so living in a morning person world now that the kids are in school is not pleasant. Also, I’m one of those “lucky” people who truly does need 8-9 hours of good sleep or their whole world is out of joint.

These are the things that have really helped me be able to get the rest I need. Some you’ve heard before, and others are a little non-conventional, but hopefully, they’ll get your mind going on how YOU can get the rest you need. As you’ll see you can tweak your routine according to your personality. The more you know about yourself the more you’ll be able to make it work. For example, extroverts and introverts both need time alone each day–but for opposite reasons!

  • Early Bedtimes For Kids – So a lifesaver for me is that my kids have early bedtimes. Even at ages 7 & 9, they’re both still in bed with doors shut at 7:30 almost every night. Then they can stay up reading or cleaning/organizing their rooms until 8, which is lights out. They’re both extroverts, like me, so this time alone helps them to get tired and shut down their brains for the night. Which plays right into the next step
  • Intentionally Wind Down— When my kids go down for the night is also when I stop working. I shut down my email and my social media and I “mush” for the night. This is so helpful. As I mentioned I’m an extrovert and a night person. In order for me not to be jazzed and my brain not to be whirling into the middle of the night, I have to intentionally shut it down. Plus I think there really is something to that screen light keeping you awake theory (look it up if you’re curious). Cuddling up in a comfy room, with dim lights, and a good book makes it possible for me to pass out easily at a decent time every night!
  • Sleep In — Yepp. You read that right. While there are a ton of articles on the merits of waking up early, I’ve found it’s best for me if I hit that snooze. My kids actually are up *before* I am. *gasps*. But, as I mentioned, they’re the ones who have to be up, dressed, and ready for the day early on. All I need to do is be up in time to make sure they’re good to go, haven’t forgotten anything, and drive them to drop off. It’s amazing what this extra 20 minutes of light snooze does for me each morning. It gives my inner not-a-morning-person a chance to ease into the day–while still in my cozy bed.

Power Up With Your Food

I hate breakfast. I wish I didn’t and I know how (supposedly) it’s the most important, but usually, I skim by with just a little of something like Greek Yogurt. I think it’s that whole “not a morning person” thing still. Because I go lightly on breakfast, though, it means I need a delicious, filling, and smart meal to help me power through the rest of my busy day. I also need something convenient and quick. Since I work from home I don’t want to spend a lot of time whipping up a meal during my precious little lunch break.

First off, let’s talk hydration. Because, really, it should go without saying, but I will anyway. There’s absolutely no way to power through your busy week if you’re not staying hydrated with water! Another thing to do when you’re eating is to **Just Eat**

This is a tough one. When your schedule gets so completely jam-packed it’s possible to want to over-task every single second. I’ve found that this ends up in a very frazzled, tired, and stressed out me! Even if you’re making these for on the go, find a spot, sit down, and actually just *enjoy* eating and drinking. It only takes a few moments and just the act of taking a break and enjoying your food makes a huge difference in giving you power and energy for your day!

Create a Stress-Free Space

This is another big one! When you get overly busy is also when those things that *can* slip through the cracks, do. Often this means that workspaces get super chaotic looking and cluttered. For me, clutter absolutely adds stress into my life. I find it much harder to focus and concentrate when working in an untidy space (although usually, I don’t even consciously realize that’s what’s going on). This also applies to my first step, as well. If your master bedroom looks like a storage room instead of a restful oasis, chances are it’s adding to your exhaustion. Clear the clutter, add in some items that bring you joy, and get back to being productive! Wondering how on earth you can find the time to do this with your current workload? Read on!

Find Your Sweet Spot

In my post on organization, I mentioned how using timers can be huge for helping increase focus and productivity. Learning how and when you work best can make or break this system. For example, I’ve found that when I’m working at the computer I’ll be super focused….and then “all of a sudden” I’ll find myself rabbit trailing down a sea of mindless social media scrolling, stray post clicking, or thinking about the million other to-dos.

By using my timers I’ve found that my brain can focus and work hard for 30-45 minutes. At this point, I start to get distracted by everything. So now I set my timer for 30-45 minutes depending on my daily schedule. Then after that, I reset my timer for 10-15 minutes to do something that breaks me away from whatever I’ve been focused on. Usually, I try to make this something when I get up and move around. So these time chunks are where you’d work in de-cluttering your work area! It’s amazing how much you can get done in 10-15 minutes when you’re motivated. Since I work from home this is the block of time that I do my laundry and other housework in. It takes the time that my brain would automatically be zoning out in and works in active, productive activities. I find once I’m back it’s so much easier to refocus!

Move Your Body

When your life gets busy crazy it’s soooo easy to also let being active slip to the wayside. Again, this is one of the worst things you can do since it’s a great source of energy! I’ve found that during this time of life I just have to get super creative with *how* I’m sneaking exercise into my routine. As you know for a long while I worked on our treadmill once the kids were in bed each night. Over the past half a year, however, for several reasons that just wasn’t working well any longer. Then I came up with a great idea.

When my kids worked out, I joined them! At first, this looked like me playing with them on the playground. When I ran us by after school, instead of scrolling on my phone while they played tag, I joined in! This was a great “work smarter not harder” move as it combined quality time with them and moving for me.

This summer they joined our local martial arts school. For months I’ve sat and watched them while I played on my computer a few times a week. Then I realized that with the group discount rate my husband and I could both join in for just a little bit extra each month. Last week I officially started and we’re all loving it! Our local school combines kid and adults, so we’re all out there together. Again, a super win for working smarter not harder.

Chances are good you have active kids, too. When they’re active find a way to move *your* body as well. That might be playing with them, or walking around the track, or going out for a jog during that time. It’ll look different for us all, but it doesn’t have to be hard!

When I stepped onto the scale and she read out the number I thought it must be broken.

There was simply no way, no way that I could have gained nearly 30 lbs in one year. But, the crazy thing was I had, and I never even knew.

I was a newlywed and was doing my yearly women’s doctor check up. I’d always been what I thought of as “medium healthy” when it came to weight, and through my teens and college years I didn’t own a scale or think at all about what I was eating or how much I was moving. So I nearly burst into tears when I stepped onto that scale 11 years ago and discovered that I was no longer anywhere close to where I was comfortable being.

Since then I’ve been bouncing up and down between that number and my original weight. Of course, pregnancies made it go up more, but I was able to go down again after….and then slowly back up again. With my “baby” having just turned 7 last week I can no longer blame anything on my “baby weight” and yet the number continues to bounce but mostly climb. Throughout the years I’ve shared my “hot healthy & happy” journey on this blog. I’d track calories, I’d exercise, I’d set huge goals and I’d share them.

Each time, though, slowly the same bad habits crept back in and the number rocketed back up. I stopped sharing and slowly slipped away from the programs, groups, and people I used to hold me accountable as I messed up, again.

Over the past year our move, work, sicknesses, and the crazy that life is lead me to throw any attempt or progress on my wellness journey out the window. Once again I went a long while without stepping on a scale, only to be shocked when it again reflected a number that I know is not what’s best for me.

Because of my story, this quote really resonated with me,

If you just exist in the world we live in without a plan, without conscious action to create a different lifestyle, you’ll end up in the normal position, which is being overweight.

This is one thing that I’ve loved about Winning The Game of Weight Loss from the start. As I mentioned, technically I’m considered at the top end of a healthy weight. Sometimes I even get funny looks when I talk about weight loss or needing to re-start my wellness journey.

However, I’m going to be honest with you all right now. I feel chubby and self-conscious at my current weight. I don’t love pictures of myself like I used to. I lack energy and feel exhausted and stressed a lot of the time. I know my bad habits and back and forth weight loss are taking their toll on my body. I want to create good habits, get healthy, and have success in this area for the rest of my life. Everything I’ve seen so far working through the first levels of Winning the Game of Weight Loss aligns with this, and I’ve already learned so much!

Focus on the Big Picture

After taking the Weight loss quiz if your answers are a good fit then you’re given the chance to attend their free Winning the Game of Weight Loss Webinar. During this one thing that really jumped out at me was they spent a lot of time talking about figuring out your big picture. They said that you can’t just focus on looking better. That is a vain and shallow reason that is all too easy to jump ship over.

I think that’s been a big problem for me. All along, although I have had deeper reasons, if I’m being perfectly honest I really just wanted to get my hot body back. I wanted to see that magic number on the scale, wanted to wear my tight clothes again without rolls showing up in spots they’re not “supposed” to be, and I wanted to turn heads like I used to do.

Yeah…pretty shallow. So since it was all based on my desire for approval and gratification it’s no surprise that when stress hit or I wanted to feel rewarded at the end of the day a generous heap of something oh-so-sugary or salty was a quick fix.

This time I’m focusing on the Big Picture. Because when I truly dug down deep I discovered do have valid and important reasons to Win the Game Of Weightloss. The biggest ones?

These two precious kids! My dear friend and I were just talking this week about our real reasons for wanting to be fit. We both agreed that we truly desire to be those little old ladies who are still driving, still serving, and still able to do all sorts of fun things with their great-grandchildren well into their 80s and 90s.

I want to live a long, beautiful life with my kids and husband and be able to adventure and explore throughout it all. I know I can only hope to live that life if I start making the right choices, habits, and mindsets now.  So I’m digging in deep, and writing it down so I don’t forget.

Start Tiny & Grow

This one is a toooough one for me. I’m very much an all-or-nothing kinda gal. So anytime I get excited I dive in head first, make all these crazy elaborate plans, and try to go full tilt boogie. When I (of course) fail miserably I throw up my hands in dismay and reach for a brownie. In Level One John Assaraf made a comparison that really stuck with me. He compared this journey to a garden. When I’m working in my little plot I have to plant tiny seeds and take care of it in order to get the end result after a long wait. In the same way I can’t try to do all-the-things-all-at-once in my own growing process.

John encouraged us to pick little, achievable goals for today. Not the ones that I normally go for, but one that gets me excited and will be just a teensy bit of a challenge. While I’m excited to finally make progress, I have to keep reining myself in from making crazy goals that I’m sure to crash and burn on!

Make It Easy & Fun

Another thing I love about the Winning The Game of Weightloss program is that there is no specific diet or exercise program you have to follow. This is huge for me. I actually have never followed one of the popular “diets” just because the thought of them immediately made me angry, haha! I love that this program provides great, scientific information from the leading experts.  You create a plan that is completely and entirely based on YOU with the program’s help! Your bad habits, your goals, your food preferences, and how you enjoy moving.

So as I get started again I’m focusing on easy and fun ways that will get me happy, not grumpy about starting my journey once more. This will help replace all the less than healthy options I’ve been defaulting to lately. It’s something that makes me smile, and from now on I’m going to focus on these kinds of easy steps that make me happy and are achievable!

Simple Chocolate Pretzel Bars

When I was expecting my last child, I promised myself that I would invest the time to take care of my body and mind after she was born. There is always so much mommy guilt when I try to do anything that takes me away from the kids. But, I wholeheartedly believe that I am a better mom when I take care of myself. I also believe that being physically active has a major impact on my emotional wellbeing. Once she made her arrival and we got into a good schedule, I started trying to keep that promise. I started out by eating better and eventually worked up the nerve to start going to the gym.

Part of my weight loss plan was to find alternatives for the unhealthy things in my diet, instead of trying to remove everything that I enjoyed. I found some cereal bars that were quick to grab, low in calories, and delicious. They became a part of my daily diet. As time went on, I realized there is more to eating healthy than looking at calories and I started trying to eat foods that were less processed. A big part of that included me learning to make some of my favorite snacks at home. I literally pulled my favorite cereal bar apart and tried to get an idea of the main ingredients. Then, I looked for the healthiest version of each ingredient and came up with a simple chocolate pretzel bar recipe.

This recipe has four ingredients-cereal, pretzels, chocolate, and honey-that’s it!

  1. The prepackaged bar has cereal flakes as the base so I looked through all the options available and found sprouted grains cereal. When grains get to the point of sprouting, they release more nutrients. So, eating products that are made with sprouted grains is supposed to provide a higher concentration of nutrients. In addition, the sprouted grains cereal that I found is low in sugar and high in fiber.
  2. There is nothing special about the pretzels I chose, they’re in the recipe to provide some salty flavor and a little extra crunch.
  3. I used dark chocolate in this recipe instead of the milk chocolate that comes on the prepackaged bars. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and there is a lot of research available about other possible health benefits such as lower blood pressure and increased brain function.
  4. I chose raw, local honey as the sweetener and binder for my homemade bars. Raw honey is less processed than the white sugar you find at the store. In addition, there are some claims that using honey from local sources can provide some relief from pollen allergies. I do not struggle with pollen allergies so I cannot give a personal opinion about that claim. But, I love buying local ingredients whenever possible because it is beneficial to the local economy and I have an idea of where the food came from.

Combine the cereal, pretzels, and honey in a bowl. As you mix, you can break up the cereal and pretzels into smaller bits. If the mixture does not seem to be sticking together enough, you can add more honey.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave or double boiler. While it is melting, prepare your casserole dish by lining it with wax paper so it will be easier to remove and cut the bars when they’ve set. Once the chocolate is melted, pour it in the bottom of your prepared dish. Then, pour the cereal mixture on top of the chocolate and pack it down. Put it in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour to let the chocolate harden.

Once the chocolate has had time to harden, remove the dish from the freezer, pull the entire piece out of the dish, and cut it into individual bars. They get crumbly if you let them sit out too long so I suggest wrapping the bars individually in wax paper and returning to the freezer until you’re ready to eat them. These can be eaten straight from the freezer and are easy to grab for a snack as you’re walking out the door.

In addition to learning to make my own snacks, I decided to add multivitamins to my daily regimen. I’ve always thought multivitamins were important, but I hate taking pills! I know it’s not that difficult to grab a pill and a glass of water, but I never did it because of my general aversion to taking pills. But, I made a promise to myself so I started looking at all the multivitamin options.

I was excited to find that there are a ton of adult multivitamin options that do not include swallowing a pill! I found two chewable options from Centrum that are available at my local Walgreens, Vitamints and Multigummies. There are more than one flavor of Vitamints, but when I saw the raspberry I knew it was the one for me-I love the combo of mint+berry! The Vitamints are crunchy and minty while the Multigummies are chewy and tasty. It is simple for me to grab these vitamins, along with a bottle of water and midmorning snack (such as my simple chocolate pretzel bars), as I head out the door.

Simple Chocolate Pretzel Bars

Serves: 6 to 8 bars
  • 2 1/2 Cups Sprouted Grains Cereal
  • 1 Cup Pretzel Bits
  • 2 Tablespoons Raw Local Honey
  • 4 OZ Dark Chocolate
  1. Combine the cereal, pretzel bits, and honey in a large bowl
  2. Line a medium casserole dish, such as 8×8, with wax paper
  3. Melt the chocolate using a double boiler or microwave
  4. Pour the melted chocolate in the casserole dish, on top of the wax paper
  5. Pour the cereal mixture on top of the melted chocolate and press down firmly
  6. Cover the dish and put it in the freezer to set for 30-60 minutes
  7. Once set, remove the entire cereal mixture and cut into six to eight bars
  8. Wrap the bars individually in wax paper and return to freezer until you’re ready to enjoy

Ever since hearing about the Color Run 5k a few years ago I have thought it would be a lot of fun–but I thought there was no way I’d be able to go 3 miles. It wasn’t after we moved to Texas and I started jogging on the treadmill that I realized that after awhile, 1 mile starts to hurt a lot less, and if you push through to 2 and 3 miles it actually gets better! Now–don’t get me wrong, it was just on the treadmill and I was still super slow. Sooo slow that one of my favorite pins says,

I Run. I’m slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter BUT I RUN!

Apparently I’m not alone, however, because that has just happened to be re-pinned over 650 times!

So as I alluded to in my last post–April was just a rough month health wise for the Elliott family! At the beginning of the month we all got “the fake flu” (which I thought was the real thing) which made Amber miss a week of school due to a fever. She got better for a few days, then super, super sick again–with a fever going up to 103. We took her in and she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection after having “the fake flu” (taking her in is how we found out that it wasn’t “the real thing”). Another week off of school and a round of antibiotics and she was as good as new!
