As you might have gathered in addition to being an incredible bookworm I’m also somewhat of a movie buff. Ever since I started dating my hubby we’ve loved cuddling up and watching movies together. Because of this I have tons of favorites, but of all my favorites the ones that always stand out in my mind has to be the amazing Lord of the Rings trilogy. Over this Christmas vacation I went to see The Hobbit with my sister and was equally in love with it–and I can’t wait for the next 2 movies to come out!
As much as I love LOTR my sister’s love expounds exponentially. We’re talking major geekdom here, haha. From posters to reading the books till the covers are tattered to collecting all kinds of items and Lord of the Rings figures-she’s done it all! So when I saw J. R. R. Tolkien: The Making of a LegendI knew what I was going to get her for Christmas!
First I wanted to read it, however! I knew that J.R.R. Tolkien was friends with C.S. Lewis (another of my favorite authors), and that he had created an extensive world and language that the triology was built up around, but beyond that I didn’t know much at all.
I found the book to be absolutely fascinating. It was so interesting to learn about this seemingly unremarkable Englishman who went on to shape and change the world through his stories that are unlike any others and that continue to awe and inspire. From his unusual birthplace to his job as a professor Colin does a great job at weaving a story that is biographic yet also easy to read and relate to.
Some of my favorite parts of the book were learning more about Tolkien’s friedship with C.S. Lewis, his service in WWI, and also his relationship with his wife–it’s so romantic to me that he patterned one of his great elven love stories after their relationship-so much so that they have the names carved on their tombs.
A must read for any avid Tolkien or Lord of the Rings Fan!
