Five Unique Baby Shower Gifts That You’re Overlooking ~ Refresh Your Soul

Legalese Disclosure Nonsense: I was provided with copies of the Refresh Your Soul Materials pictured (Deny Yourself by Lisa Chan, Waiting in Wonder, and Prayers for Every Day–all from different companies) so that my soul could also be refreshed and I could pass along the goodness to you! All pondering, happy feelings, and fabulous pictures are my own!

Being a new mom is wonderful, exhilarating, breathtaking. It’s also exhausting, draining, and overwhelming. And you swing through these seeming paradoxes on a moment by moment basis which ads to the crazy of it all even more! That’s why I think that it’s *so* crucial for all new moms to make sure that they don’t let their spiritual walk slide during this time of life–which is just oh SO easy to do! Here are 3 sweet gifts to help Moms feed their spirit when they need it most!

Deny Yourself DVD by Lisa Chan

In the second film of her new series True Beauty: Finding Your Identity in Jesus  (remember my review of Be Still?), Lisa Chan discusses how to Deny Yourself  in a world that is only focused on serving self and getting ahead. Deny Yourself weaves Lisa’s teaching with the story of Irene, a wife and mother, who, several years ago, was at her wit’s end in her marriage. Ready to divorce her alcoholic husband, God moved mightily in his heart and she was called to forgive him when he come to her with a repentant spirit. In a marriage that’s now thriving, Irene and her husband have been challenged by the biblical command to deny themselves by living out God’s instruction to “care for the orphans.” Together, they have adopted several children into their family. I found Irene’s story to be so incredible, touching, and moving! New moms are often required to deny themselves like no other time in their life, and I believe this short, sweet, soft DVD would be such a huge blessing to them as a gift! It’s perfect for any Christian woman, however!

Waiting in Wonder: Growing in Faith While You’re Expecting

While there are devotionals for expecting moms, what to expect books for expecting moms, and there are journals for expecting moms, I’ve never seen a book that combines the three aspects all together .Waiting in Wonder does so beautifully and would make the perfect gift for any mom-to-be whether she just announced (there is an entire section for the first trimester!) or given as a baby gift (she can always go back and fill in the first few months!) Each week is broken into sections at the beginning:

  • The Wonder Within Example: Week 20 Though your little one is about one-eight of the size he or she will be at birth, all major  organs are developed by now.
  • Points for Prayer and Praise Example: Week 22 Pray for your little one as he or she develops a sense of balance. Pray also that as your little one grows, his or her priorities in this life will reflect the balance that God intends)
  •  Mommy’s Memory Verse Example : Week 8 We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16

Then it is broken into daily devotionals that you write the date in on top, it has a Bible verse, a short devotional, then a page of questions dealing with what you just learned and how it applies to your pregnancy and your spiritual life. Unlike many short devotionals the devo doesn’t feel trite or fluffy. Instead it feels like a great spiritual friend is sitting down with you, sharing her pregnancy with you, and pointing you to Christ in the same conversation. This would make the perfect sweet gift to help every mom really celebrate her pregnancy through Christ and will leave her with an amazing keepsake to pass along someday!

Prayers for Every Day (Roma Downey’s Little Angels series)

It would be very hard for me to create a book gift for an expecting mom without throwing in a board book as well! This darling new release features more than 50 simple rhyming prayers that cover a typical day and the typical worries of a young child. I love it because it is a book that you can use for and with a baby for years–right now I read it to Amber and Tyler for a bedtime book, but for younger babies you could pick just a few prayers or just one each day! Here is a sample prayer:

Dear God,
I paint with many color
and I draw in many hues.
But nothing can compare to the glory found in you!

I like how there is a great mix of praising prayers, confessing prayers, and asking prayers. I feel like many times as we grow up we begin treating prayers like wish lists, Please give me _______ Amen.” It’s great to be teaching the right way to pray from the youngest age!
