A Perfect Pet for Peyton by Gary Chapman

I recently talked about reading The 5 Love Languages for Children and how interesting I found it. The Perfect Pet for Peyton is a wonderful children’s book that works hand in hand with the other one.

In this book two twins, Penny & Peyton, set out to find the “perfect pet pals” on their birthday. Along the way they learn a little more about themselves–and their friends–by the pets that are chosen that match their love languages perfectly.

This book would be great for young school age children. Amber absolutely *adores* it and we’ve been reading it over and over and OVER for bedtime each night. It’s a little on the longer side–but the amazing sounding pet emporium and all the different animals keep her entranced! Even though she’s a bit young to grasp the concept of love languages it’s still great for her to be learning the different ways we have to show people that we love them!

The Woodcarver DVD

Although we don’t watch a ton of TV at our house hubby and I both enjoy snuggling up at the end of the day or on weekends and watching a good movie or one of our favorite TV shows together. My favorites are good clean films that also have a great, unique storyline, good production value, and great acting. And unfortunately that’s usually extremely hard to find!

Well I now have a new movie to add to my favorites list! The Woodcarver blew me away! I watched it last night and it was truly awesome. It made me laugh, and it made me cry (real tears–more than once!) and it left me with that warm fuzzy feeling inside that great movies leave me with (am I the only one that happens to?) I loved all the the characters and the acting was extremely good (which is always harder to achieve when you have several tense/tearful scenes) as was the production value.

The story line is about a troubled teenager whose parents are in the midst of a divorce and a lonely man who has lost his wife of 40+ years to cancer. It gives a great view of very real and common problems in life and how God can work through them all. I’d highly recommend it for the entire family!

The Guardian Duke by Jamie Carie

After a day full of work, laundry, cleaning, kiddos, and all that goes into life as me there is no better way to unwind than curling up with a good book. My favorite me time stories are Christian historical fiction romances. I devoured read through The Guardian Duke in just 3 days. It was just what the Dr. ordered after a hard week of work and reading through many deep and thick non-fiction books lately.

From Blah to Awe by Jenna Bishop *Review*

I had the great privilege of growing up in a Christian family who attended church regularly, participated in church activities, and even furthered my knowledge of Christ through home schooling me which provided a Christ focused education.

When you have all of this at your fingertips and spoon fed to you it’s easy to just take it for granted. Especially as a teen church becomes more about talking with friends before and after the service and waiting through the message because that’s what you do. Because that was my experience I really related to Jenna in this book-and I can see how it would be a great book for Christian teen girls.

I didn’t get much out From Blah to Awe for myself–but I suppose that is not terribly surprising since high school was further back than I like to think about these days! I would be interested to see/hear what a teenagers review of it would be. I think that it has potential if a girl was to do the activities and really meditate on God’s word while reading it. Her writing and wording are very teen oriented though at times I feel like she may go a little over the top with this–teens can feel when you’re trying to act like a teen even when you are not one yourself. However I think that teen girls would really enjoy this fun, practical, and interesting book overall. I wish I could have read it as a teenager myself as I feel I would have enjoyed it.

Sweeter than Birdsong by Rosslyn Elliott Review

In case you haven’t noticed, I love reading-especially historical fiction. My very favorite is when books are in a series–I love stories that are linked and chances to get to know the characters and their lives beyond just the one book. Plus it gives you something to look forward to when you have to draw to the end of a story! So when I read and reviewed  Fairer Than Morning I have been looking forward to this book ever since!

Die Young: Burying Your Self in Christ by Hayley and Michael DiMarco *Review*

Die Young

I absolutely adore reviewing books. I have always been an avid reader–ever since I learned how to read. Ever since I started reviewing books for my blog and on sites like Amazon I’ve enjoyed getting to read a variety of my favorite kinds of book. Many of the time these books are “good reads” but not worthy of gaining a permanent spot in our bookcases as I pass them along to friends/thrift stores/book stores. Every once in awhile a book comes along that is a diamond amongst semi precious stones. Die Young is one of these diamonds!

Such a short little book–just 7 chapters and 173 pages–but wow what great truths and convictions it holds! This book takes common Bible passages and really breaks them down and shows how they apply to your life–all based around the theme of dying to self and the paradoxes that it brings. Everything from knocking yourself off your high horse, to the sin of not having self control over things like food, to the wrong things with being a perfectionist are discussed. I was so convicted 75 pages in that I wrote this Moms of Faith devotional about the things that I learned and applied to my own life.

Such a great book–I’m now recommending it to all my friends and family offline as well as on. If you’re looking to grow, to stretch, and to learn how to find true happiness and contentment then this is a must read!

The Language of Love and Respect ~ Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

Women see the world with pink sunglasses and pink hearing aids.
Men see with blue sunglasses and blue hearing aids.
And as a result miscommunication often arises!!
In this follow up to his popular book Love and Respect, Dr. Emerson dives into the ins and outs of communication and how it works with his Love and Respect theories in The Language Of Love and Respect.
It was interesting for me to read this book as I hadn’t read the first. It was easy to follow along with though as he seemed to rehash much of what was included in the first book. Although I didn’t find the book earth shattering, or the content in it completely new and startling (which probably shouldn’t be surprising since marriage books are among my favorites to read) it did have many good things in it. I enjoyed learning helpful tips and hints to communicate with my very blue hubby, and had to laugh when he talked about “spider-webbing” (going off on a million topics at once and expecting your hubby to follow) I’m definitely guilty of that one!
I actually got to use some of the tactics in the book this week as hubby made an extravagant purchase for himself I did not approve of. At first I started in on him as I always do, but then I decided to step back and practice what I’d been learning. I realized thanks to the book that the issue wasn’t really the purchase, but the fact that I was feeling unloved as a result of it. I respectfully told him this and he responded so much better to me than nagging him or criticizing his spending habits would have made him.
Although not my favorite relationship book of all time, The Language Of Love and Respect was very helpful, and I would whole heartedly recommend adding it to your bookshelf!A big thanks to Thomas Nelson for providing me with this book to review!
